“Where will my data be stored?”
It’s one of the first questions clients ask when discussing cloud solutions. For some, it’s just a matter of due diligence around security and data ownership. For others - such as healthcare, government and financial clients - it’s a regulatory requirement that data be housed in Canada.
Until now, the best we could promise is that Microsoft had industry-leading security, but that wasn’t enough for those clients with a regulatory requirement. Fortunately, Microsoft was listening and they’ve finally rolled out a Canadian data center. So, whether you need your data stored in Canada or just prefer it that way, you can finally start taking advantage of cloud offerings like Azure, Office 365 and Dynamics CRM Online.
How do I move my data to Canada?
To move your data to Canada, you will need to submit a request with Microsoft. (Or let us know to do that on your behalf.) The ability to request a move will become available in Q3 CY 2016. The enrollment period will be a minimum of 60 days long. Existing Office 365 customers will need to submit a request before the deadline for their country in order to have their Office 365 services moved to their new region.
Currently, Dynamics CRM clients will need to open a Technical Support case and the CRM Online Support team will help to coordinate your request with the CRM Online Service Engineering team. (Again, you can let Prophet do that on your behalf.) The Support Engineer assigned to your case will raise an internal request and work with you and the CRM Online Service Engineering team to schedule a suitable date and time to migrate and follow up to ensure the migration has gone smoothly.
After requesting a move, Microsoft will plan to move you as quickly as possible. Due to the unpredictable nature of many of the constraints, they cannot share a specific date or timeframe for the moves. You will see a notification after the move has completed.
Moves may take up to 24 months from the request deadline for your country to complete.
After requesting a move, it is not possible to change your selection as we begin to process the moves once you have made the request.
Will there be any downtime?
The entire migration will occur in the background and Microsoft has advertised there will be no downtime for users. However, there may be some specific functionality within Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and Skype for Businesses that may be limited during the move. (See the specifics here.)
What about new customers?
New Canadian Office 365 and Dynamics CRM Online customers will automatically have their data hosted in the Canadian datacenters.
